How selling works
The same steps apply on every marketplace. The details differ, so read the marketplace's own page before you send a skin.
1. Choose instant cash or a listing
Instant cash pays a known price today. A listing waits for a buyer, so it can pay more but takes longer. Compare what you would receive after fees, not the headline price.
2. Send the skin through a Steam trade offer
The marketplace sends you a trade offer. Check the exact item, wear and any stickers in the offer, then confirm it in the Steam mobile app. Never share your Steam Guard code, API key or trade link with anyone who contacts you first.
3. Steam's 7-day trade protection
Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade is trade protected for 7 days, and the trade can be reversed during that time. Many marketplaces release the proceeds of a sale only after that period. Items bought on the Steam Community Market carry the same lock.
4. Identity checks
Several marketplaces ask for identity verification before the first cash-out, and the payment details usually have to match the verified name. Have your documents ready so the first payout is not delayed.
5. Fees
Some marketplaces build their fee into an instant cash price, others show it as a separate percentage, and payment providers can add their own charge. On the Steam Community Market, Steam adds a 5% fee and a 10% game fee on top of the seller price, and the proceeds stay in your Steam wallet.
Selling CS2 skins: questions
How do I sell CS2 skins for cash?
Choose the route first. An instant cash offer pays a fixed price today. A listing sells only when a buyer takes it at your price, so the cash arrives later but is often higher. After the sale the money goes to the payout route the marketplace supports, which is why the fees and payout routes tab matters as much as the headline price. Steam Community Market sales pay Steam wallet funds, not cash.
What is the difference between instant cash and a listing price?
Instant cash is the highest buy order a market posts: you sell now and the price is known. A listing price is what you ask. It competes with the other listings for the same skin, so the lowest current listing shows what you are up against, and your skin sells only when a buyer accepts it.
Why can I not cash out straight away?
Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade is trade protected for 7 days and the trade can be reversed during that time. Many marketplaces wait out that period before they release the proceeds of a sale. Items bought on the Steam Community Market carry the same 7-day lock.
Do I need to verify my identity to get paid?
Often yes. Several marketplaces ask for identity verification before the first cash-out, and the payment details usually have to match the verified name. The fees and payout routes tab lists what each screened market states on its own pages. Check the marketplace before you send a skin.
How much does Steam keep if I sell on the Community Market?
Steam adds a 5% Steam fee and a 10% game fee for CS2 on top of the seller price, so the buyer pays about 15% more and the seller keeps roughly 87% of what the buyer pays. The proceeds are Steam wallet funds, which cannot be withdrawn as cash.
