Trade safety

A fair price does not make a trade safe. These are the checks that matter in Steam.

  1. What you receive is locked for 7 days. Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade is trade protected for 7 days: usable in game, but not sellable or tradable. Accounts without the Steam Mobile Authenticator can face a longer hold, and the Steam trade window shows any hold before you confirm.
  2. The trade can be reversed inside that week. A reversal returns the items to the sender. Never pay for skins outside Steam (cash, crypto, gift cards, another site): a reversal leaves you with no item and no refund.
  3. Read the exact items in the Steam confirmation. Check wear, StatTrak or Souvenir tags, stickers and the item count. A lookalike swapped in at the last second is the most common trick. Confirm only in the Steam mobile app.
  4. Protect your API key. Anyone with your Steam Web API key can cancel real offers and send altered ones. Never enter it on a site that asks for it. If you ever did, revoke it on the Steam API key page and change your password.
  5. Check the other side. Look at account age, Steam level, bans and whether the inventory and friends list are public. A clean profile is not a guarantee, but a days-old account with a rare item is a warning.

How to verify a trade bot

  1. Start from the marketplace, not from a message. Type or bookmark the address. Do not follow links from chat, comments, ads or direct messages.
  2. The offer must match your request. It should arrive right after you ask for it on the site, with the same items and value the site showed. An offer that appears out of nowhere is not from the marketplace.
  3. Compare the sender profile. The marketplace names the bot accounts or shows a trade code that has to match the offer message. Lookalike profiles copy the name and avatar but not the profile address.
  4. Never send items to a person "to hold". Real marketplaces use their own bots and escrow; they never ask you to move items to someone first.
  5. When something is off, stop. Decline the offer in Steam. Declining costs nothing; a confirmed trade cannot be undone by anyone but the sender.

Trading CS2 skins: questions

How do I check whether a CS2 trade is fair?

Price each item by what it sells for, not by its Steam Community Market price alone: Steam prices run above marketplace prices and ignore float, pattern and stickers. This page prices both sides on one basis at a time (best instant cash bid, the lowest ask or the Steam lowest listing), shows who comes out ahead in dollars and lets you switch the basis.

What do You gain, You lose and Even mean?

The gap is measured against the smaller side. Within 5% either way the trade is Even. Beyond that, You gain means what you receive is worth more than what you give on the chosen price basis, and You lose means the opposite. The default basis is instant cash when both items have a bid, otherwise the lowest ask.

Why can I not sell what I receive straight away?

Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade is trade protected for 7 days. It can be used in game but not sold or traded, and during that week the trade can be reversed. Count what you receive as locked value until the protection ends.

How can I tell that a trade bot is real?

Start the trade from the marketplace itself, typed or bookmarked, never from a link in chat. The offer should arrive right after your request and match the item, wear and value the site showed. Compare the sender profile with the one the marketplace names, and check the exact items in the Steam confirmation before you approve it in the mobile app.

Which trade scams are most common?

A lookalike skin swapped in at the last second (other wear, no StatTrak tag, different stickers); payment outside Steam; fake "checker", "verification" or escrow sites that ask for your API key or an item; and people who claim they can reverse a trade for you. Real marketplaces never ask you to send items to a person to hold.
